The AC/Defrost Issue (possible fix)

Just like most of you, I am very dissapointed with the fact that if you use your defrost your stuck with the ac on until the truck is turned off. As I have read on here, many of you think it has to do with the programing of the super-mega-encrypted ecu code that no one can seem to crack. As of now, the problem as something we all have to live with. But maybe not....

As I was researching my wife's new ride, an 05 liberty, I stumbled across a thread that wound up being pretty interesting. linky It seemed like the how-to was pretty senseless until the third post. You can dissable the ac auto on feature on a jeep with a piece of packing tape!

Now I haven't had my dash bezel off nor do I have time too, but this could be something to look in to. I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with exactly how our ac controls work, but I'm sure someone around here is smart enough to figure it out and see if this is an option. If it doesn't work oh well, but if it does, that would kick Arse!

Thanks in advance for anyone who checks this out.

I've only used the defrost a couple of times, but I could hear and feel the compressor shutting down when I switched to a different setting.

This is actually a much nicer system than my wife's old 4Runner. It was a nightmare to turn the A/C off and have it stay off.

Are you guys leaving it on defrost for a few minutes before switching to off or another position? M compressor will not shut off unless I restart the truck after it has been on defrost for a few minutes. The A/C light will go off, but the compressor continues to run.
Ditto here...a bit annoying indeed. I kicked it once to see if it would fix it...Din't wurk

Does the ECU upgrade fix this?

Not only does it work better in defrost with the compressor on, but most cars are designed this way to get the compressor and the system lubed up and used during the winter, when people dont use the a/c, but do use defrost.

The owners manual from Nissan recommends running the compressor for at least 10 minutes every month i belive...

A lot of newer vechicles use the A/c while defrosting it works better that way. Hyundai has been using this method for a long time. This is not a defect it is intentional.

I had a 99 FRONTIER before my TITAN and it did the same thing. When I took it to the dealer to have it fixed they said that it is supposed to do that.

Nobody is saying its not supposed to do that, just that they dont like it. I suppose thier concerned with the percieved gas mileage savings, but its not really worth worrying about. I prefer to be able to see out my windows and will happily leave it as designed. I also live in the most humid freaking place in the country.

Ill have to double check mine, maybe Im wrong.

You are correct. I just went out and took some time to check ALL positions and yes, the A/C kicks on when put on ANY def. mode....be it floor/def combo, the indent between it and def, and def itself. The difference is that when put on floor/def, the A/C light doesn't come on....but the compressor does kick on and cycles. When put on DEF, the compressor kicks on AND the A/C indicater light light comes on. Once on for more than a minute, switching from def to another non def mode (besides OFF) does not shut the compressor off. The A/C light stays on as well. Even if you hit the A/C switch to shut the A/C off (the A/C indicater light WILL shut off), the compressor still cycles until the fan switch is switched to OFF. But if you turn the fan back on ANY position w/o first turning the engine off and restarting, the compressor DOES come back on. I've already gone over this with the Nissan tech and it's the same on all Titan/Armadas. So pay no attention the the A/Cs' orange indicater light.....it's not gospel as to what the unit is actually doing. I too think this is a stupid way to program the A/C to work but think it's probably only kept on after turning DEF off because whatever control device Nissan uses was the cheapest. There's absolutely NO reason for the A/C to stay on while not being used to either COOL the interior or to defrost/defog the windshield. It's simple cost cutting at it's worst.

Folks, we're not arguing that the A/C shouldn't come on when you hit defrost. We're mad because once you're done defrosting your windows during your morning commute, you'll switch from defrost to the face vents, but your A/C compressor will continue to run till the engine is killed.

For me, I drive 25 miles to work in the AM and only need the defrost for ~15 minutes of my 45 minute commute. With the compressor running the whole 25 mile trip, it kills my mileage.

A way I've found that beats this stupid set up is, I just flip on the A/C through the face vents and DON'T use defrost. This takes a little while longer to defrost the windshield, but I can turn the compressor off by hitting the A/C button.

You should go sell your truck ,,,NOW, before it's too late!!!!
Seriously , It's Killing your gas mileage? You don't think it has anything to do with that big V8? What do you do in the summer time? End this thread before someone is late for work..
I guess when nothing else is wrong with the truck, there is still someone that can find something.

Maybe in your truck, but not in mine. I read about this issue long ago, and came up with a solution that works.
OK I'll Bite what was your solution???

Mine has the problem of not shutting off.

My Ancient Chinese Solution:
I just shut the truck down and restart. Problem solved.
